Scientific Concepts in the Quran: Embryology

Let us examine in detail the Quranic verse found in Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:12–14), which makes a strong connection between scientific observation, introspection, and divine truth.

Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:12–14)

🌟 Transliteration:

12. Wa laqad khalaqnā al-insāna min sulālatin min ṭīn.
13. Thumma jaʿalnāhu nuṭfatan fī qarārin makīn.
14. Thumma khalaqnā an-nuṭfata ʿalaqatan, fa khalaqnā al-ʿalaqata muḍghah, fa khalaqnā al-muḍghata ʿiẓāman, fa kasawnā al-ʿiẓāma laḥman; thumma anshaʾnāhu khalqan ākhar; fa tabārakallāhu aḥsanu al-khāliqīn.

🌟 English Translation:

12. And indeed, We created man from an extract of clay.
13. Then We placed him as a drop (of sperm) in a firm lodging (the womb).
14. Then We made the drop into a clinging clot, then We made the clot into a lump (like chewed flesh), then We made the lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the Best of creators.

📌 Scientific Stages Described in the Quran

The Quran outlines six distinct stages of human development:

1. Extract of Clay (سُلَالَةٍ مِّن طِينٍ)

·         This reflects the origin of humans from earthly materials (minerals and organic matter).

·         Science confirms: All elements in the human body (calcium, iron, carbon) originate from earth’s soil and the food chain.

2. Sperm Drop (نُطْفَةً - Nuṭfah)

·         "Nutfah" means a drop of liquid, accurately referring to seminal fluid that contains spermatozoa.

·         Modern embryology confirms that fertilization begins with a single sperm cell from millions in a drop.

3. Clinging Clot (عَلَقَة - ‘Alaqah)

·         "Alaqah" has 3 meanings in Arabic:

1.      Clinging or hanging (the embryo clings to the uterine wall).

2.      Leech-like shape (resembles a leech in early development).

3.      Blood clot (the embryo is rich in blood and suspended in fluid).

✅ Scientific Correlation: Between days 7–14, the embryo implants itself in the uterus wall and literally “clings” to it—matching all definitions of "alaqah".

4. Chewed-like Lump (مُضْغَة - Muḍghah)

·         "Muḍghah" means a chewed substance—irregular in shape with indentations like teeth marks.

·         At around week 4, the embryo begins to develop somites (primitive vertebrae), giving it a chewed-like appearance under a microscope.

✅ Scientifically confirmed through scanning electron microscopy.

5. Formation of Bones (عِظَامًا - ‘Iẓāman)

·         "Iẓām" refers to bones.

·         By week 6–7, the mesoderm forms cartilage models, which begin ossification into bone structures.

6. Clothing of Bones with Flesh (كَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا)

·         The verse describes muscle (flesh) formation after bones, which science confirms occurs through the development of myoblasts around skeletal structures.

7. A New Creation (خَلْقًا آخَرَ)

·         After the embryonic phase, organs begin to form, the nervous system activates, and the fetus takes human shape with distinct identity—a profound transition.

📌 Scientific Validation

·         Dr. Keith L. Moore, a world-renowned embryologist, confirmed the accuracy of the Quranic embryological stages in his works.

·         His textbook "The Developing Human" was updated to include Quranic insights, praising their surprising scientific accuracy.

“It is clear to me that these statements must have come from God.”
Dr. Keith Moore, University of Toronto

📌 Final Reflections

This miraculous description, delivered more than 1400 years ago in the Quran—long before microscopes and modern medicine—is a profound sign (ayah) of divine knowledge.

🌟 The Quran uses clear biological stages, described in the right order, with metaphors based on visual observation that align with modern embryology.

"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (Surah Fussilat 41:53)
